PGx TESTING

PGx Testing_Oral Swab

What is pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing?

Pharmacogenomic testing (PGx testing) is a laboratory test that analyzes your DNA, looking for individual genes that can affect how medications respond to your body’s makeup. These results are used to create a better understanding of how your personalized medication list should look, which will help improve your healthcare and quality of life.

What are the benefits of PGx Testing?

Have you ever had a limited or nonexistent response to a medication? Will you be starting a new medication in the future? Have you had anxiety about starting new medications? Do you want to avoid the painful process of trialing countless medications “until one works”? PGx testing could benefit you.

Getting a PGx test can help prevent: adverse drug reactions or side effects of medications, polypharmacy (the unnecessary use of multiple drugs when only one is needed), and/or possible allergic reactions.

How does it work?

The test is done right at Rose Pharmacy & Boutique Apothecary. A cheek swab is used to collect the sample. The test is then sent to a CLIA-certified lab for analysis. The results are returned to our pharmacy professionals. We then contact you to schedule a follow-up appointment. A pharmacist trained in analyzing genetic information will personally go over your test results with you in the first session. A follow-up session to reassess patient factors is given about 6 months after the first session because we know that life changes and we are willing to change with you. These two sessions will involve explanation of what your individualized test results mean, how these results may affect your current and future drug regimen, and what the best options are for you going forward. These sessions are chosen by you for you so any further questions you might have can be addressed at any time. In addition, we will include your physician/doctor in your final results and pharmacist-given recommendations. This is done to improve your quality of health and provide easier access to medications for you.
